Places Where You Can Have Encounters
With Animal Ghosts*

1. Clifton, Arizona: The "Fantasma Colorado" or
Red Ghost lurks here near Chase Creek. It's
the revenant of a "huge orange camel" carring
a corpse on it hump. Thought to be missing
(for all eternity evidently) from a U.S. Army
Expedition in 1857.

2. Pet Cemetery, Los Angeles: The spirit of
Rudolph Valentino's Great Dane: Kabar is
known to the lick the hands of those visiting
its grave.

3. Mentone, Alabama: The sprites of Granny
Dollar and her faithful dog Buster roam
the woods, where Granny's cabin one stood.
Granny's spirit was upset, because her
tombstone money was stolen, though,
with the placement of a grave marker
in 1973, her sightings have all but
disappeared. Buster meanwhile, is
still heard merrily thrashing about
the woods, presumably doing what
all ghost dogs do...

4. Newberry, South Carolina: Old Buncombe
Road leaves many of the locals and vistors
with a strong case of the willies, as the
famed "Hound of Goshen" is noted for --
suddenly from nowhere -- leaping out
at unsuspected travellers and chasing
them between Church Cemetery and
Goshen Hill. The Hound has been doing
this since the 1800s.

5. Casper, Wyoming: The Rattlesnake Range
area of this locale is home to the "White Devil",
a magnificient, white, untameable stallion while
alive. In death, this ornery mustang critter is
free to roam the land it loved so much.

6. Port Tobacco, Maryland: "Peddler's Rock",
a bloodstained boulder is the domicile of the
creature called "Blue Dog". The spectral canine
is said to guard the buried gold of its master, a
peddler, who was robbed and killed here.

The Weird Wolves Have Spread To Michigan

The Witchie Wolves of Omer Plains

I grew up on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, twelve miles north of Bay City, Michigan. With the limited nightlife available to teenagers in this rural area, the vast majority of teens during the mid-seventies would drive around the piny woods and wetlands looking for parties or privacy. Since at least the early sixties, it was a teenage rite for male students from Pinconning High School to pile into a car and drive twenty miles north to the wilderness known as "The Omer Plains." Located a few miles west of the little town of Omer (the Omer Plains is marked on Arenac County maps), this strange uninhabited place of scrubby pines and swampland is home of the phenomenon known as "The Witchie Wolves."

According to local Chippewa legend, Witchie Wolves are invisible spirit dogs that guard the graves of ancient warriors, attacking anyone foolish enough to venture out at night on foot. Although I went to the Omer Plains twice, nobody in our vehicle was brave enough to get out of the car. We could all hear the hideous high-pitched laughing bark that came from all directions out of the near total darkness. Several times a year, a skeptical youth, usually an athlete or an outdoorsman type would take the dare and get out of the car, only to be violently knocked to the ground by what always seemed to be an invisible wolf or dog, snarling and snapping at the victim's head. Screaming and scrambling back into the car, nobody ever stuck around long enough to see what else would happen. I have seen tough guys cry while telling of their experience. I have heard claims of torn clothes and I have seen scratches and dents on roofs of cars which the owner, straight faced and sober, would claim weren't there before the Witchie Wolf attack.

It seemed like everyone knew and accepted the Witchie Wolves. They were and probably still are given a wide berth.

Pigman of Elwood, Indiana

I would like to tell you about the "monster" from the small town I grew up in. Elwood, Indiana is about sixty miles north of Indianapolis. The towns population is aprox. 12'000. Elwood is located smack in the middle of the corn belt. The landscape for miles around is flat. Very flat. Elwood's monster was called the "Pigman". Said to have the head of a pig and the body of a man. (some said just the opposite, body of a pig, head of a man) "Pigman" was suppose to be the son of a farm couple who, because of his deformities, kept him locked away in their rural farmhouse. Late one night the house caught fire, killing the old couple. But their son escaped, though burned badly. "pigman" roamed the backroads of western madison county. Leaping out at teenagers in their cars, and scaring the hell out of them. I never saw the "pigman", And I don't recall anyone really claiming to have either. But the stories continued. Probably as a good excuse to take your friends or your girl for a drive in the country at night. I did know of a place where a white German Shepherd lived. This dog loved to chase cars. At night it made for a good scare for anyone not who didn't know what was going on. "OH MY GOD, IT'S THE PIGMAN!" We'd yell when old shep ran in front of the cars headlights. It's white coat made it look like something right from out of this world. By the way, the area "pigman" was suppose to roam was right inbetween Elwood and a small town called Hobs. Which I believe is another name for the Devil. Keep up the good work. I'll be back to your web soon.

Tracking the legendary Ghost Deer of Northern California

It lives in the wilderness canyons of Mt. Eddy west of Mt. Shasta, as well as in the minds of those who are beguiled by it.

The Ghost Deer, according to legend, is a buck that looks something like the elk in the Hartford insurance commercials. In a state where most bucks look like a Great Dane with horns, the Ghost Deer has antlers with 12 points on one side, 10 points on the other. Most believe it weighs 240 to 250 pounds, unless, that is, you believe that it really is a ghost.

The Only Town In America To Be Nuked*

The "lucky" town would be Florence, South Carolina,
or at least the the outskirts of it. As that is where
the home of Walter Gregg and his family was located.

It's important to know that, because on the
afternoon of March 11, 1958, a B-47 "en
route from Georgia's Hunter Air Force base
to West Germany" accidently dropped a
bomb on the former Gregg house.

An atomic bomb to be precise, as somehow the
bomber's bay doors dropped open and the
nuclear warhead fell out, traversing its eerie
path, likely serenaded by a chorus of "Oh Sh!t"
from the plane's occupants, downwards on
to the Gregg household, where it crashed
through their roof.

And then exploded in a huge flash!!

The TNT in the bomb's trigger device that is.
Fortunately the enriched uranium remained
inert and did not fissile, or there would have
been an far bigger explosion.

Still the damage was considerable. The house
was obliterated, a 35-foot crater was carved
out in the backyard, five other houses and
a church damaged, and the shockwave from
the blast turned around a motorist's car,
who was driving along on Route 301
at the time.

Amazingly enough, the Gregg family: Walter, his
wife, their three young children and a cousin,
who were all home at the time as the bomb
landed, escaped with their lives, just "slightly
injured by flying debris."

And the U.S. Air Force, five months later,
reached agreement with the family, in an
out of court settlement that awarded
them $54,000 dollars.

Well, it's the least they could have done!

An Alligator In The White House*

"Holy Snapping Jaws," Batman!

Yes, it's true. While some of our past presidents have acted lizardly, there was at one time, a real live alligator
in residence in the East Room of the White House.

It was the beloved pet of John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts, the sixth president of the United States (1825 - 1829), and he apparently really loved his Wally gator.

It was said, President Adams got many a chuckles from his guests fleeing the East Room in terror. A few interns in recent years, have likely done the same thing.

Good show, President Adams, we say. And we wonder if the Gator's ghost is still crawling about the East Room? And could Lincoln's ghost be feeding it?

Charlemont, MA Hauntings

In the spirit of the holiday
Phantom lights and Indian spirits, slamming doors and footsteps in the dark, ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties - tales of such hauntings are told of many places in Franklin County.

In Charlemont, which seems to have more than its share of ghost stories, one spirit was said to haunt the house on Main Street where murdered deputy sheriff Emmett F. Haskins used to live.

"It was Christmas time, about the 23rd of December 36 years ago. It was a beautiful sunny day. I had gone upstairs to change the sheets on the bed and thought that I heard something at the end of the hallway, like the sound of a door opening," said Eve Blakeslee, who still lives in Charlemont, if not in the same house.

"I went out into the hall, but I didn't see anything so I went back to work and then I heard it again," she said.

After the third time hearing noises out in the hall, Blakeslee stood in the passage and waited to see if she could determine the cause of the disturbance.

"I stood looking down the hall toward the linen closet and after a while I saw the doorknob completely turn around and I saw the door open. I thought it was a prowler," she said.

Blakeslee called her husband, who rushed home from work and grabbed his gun.

"He went over to the closet door and yelled, 'Come out, whoever is there.' Then, he threw open the door, but no one was there," she said.

According to Blakeslee, her children and their baby sitter often heard noises, too, in the upstairs hallway, mostly footsteps and doors opening and closing.

"I started asking around to see if anyone who lived in the house had died a tragic death. I learned that the house had once belonged to Emmett Haskins," she said.

In 1910, Haskins was a deputy sheriff for the county and had gone to the town of Monroe to arrest a man accused of stabbing a factory manager; he never returned from that journey. Haskins was killed by a man named Silas Phelps who blasted him with a shotgun.

The Charlemont Inn also has its share of reported ghosts and apparitions. Charlotte Dewey, one of the owners, says that many of the guests and most of the staff have seen or smelled apparitions in the hotel at one time or another.

"We like to think of them as ghostly guests," she said.

Whitman's ghost bed

WHITMAN — When children walk down Temple Street tonight to trick-or-treat, they might pass by a house whose eerie reputation sets it apart from neighboring homes.

The legend of the old Cape at 145 Temple St., built in 1831, is featured as one of 10 spooky tales in "New England's Ghostly Haunts" by Robert Ellis Cahill.

According to Cahill's story, strange things happened to former owners David and Barbara English when they lived there in the 1970s and early '80s.

Coffee cups slid off their hooks in the cabinet, slippers would levitate in mid-air and David English would get a choking feeling when he slept in that bed, according to Cahill's book.

The Windmill on Widow's Hill

The windmill stood in the gathering sunlight of that November morning, its arms stretching in four opposite directions. A pair of crows stood atop the roof, silent sentinels and witnesses to the horror below. Early morning's stillness was suddenly broken with a shriek, not from the crows, but from a woman who ran screaming down Widow's Hill toward the sleeping village ahead.

Shooting A UFO

One of the strangest UFO shootings and chases occurred near Loris, South Carolina around the "Bewitching Hour",
midnight on January 29, 1953.

As Jim Moseley tells it*, farmer and gas station owner Lloyd C. Booth heard a "commotion" among his farm animals and went out to investigate. South of the barn and the agitated animals, Booth spotted a UFO, flying low in the sky, only about 75 feet up. The flying saucer was barely above the tree tops and moving at leisurely rate, "'about a walking pace'", so Booth followed it on foot, even ran out front to "get a better view."

He observed "two lights in back and a lighted 'window' in front, but couldn't really see into the craft. Booth heard a "faint hum", but didn't see any means of propulsion or identifying marks.

The strange chase between the walking Booth and the slowly-propelled craft lasted for about twenty minutes and covered about a half mile. Booth called for his family, but received no response, and then decided to take a shot at the UFO with his .22 pistol, just 'to see if it would respond. And it did.'

Booth heard the bullet bounce off the saucer, and then the UFo zoomed off, at a rapid pace, which the befuddled farmer estimated to be "'a good six hundred miles an hour.'"

Not sure how correct a guess of the craft's speed that was, but it was fast enough, that when Booth fired a
second shot, the flying saucer was "well out of range..."

So, truly a weird UFO encounter and shooting.
